- Describe in detail 3-5 specific conventions - one must be from the specific aspects list - (conventions can be narrative techniques or elements of film language) associated with your specific genre that you have chosen from the brief's table.
- For EACH convention, explain in detail how its use is appropriate for the subject matter, and will appeal to your target audience.
- Your discussion of the conventions should include an understanding of the overall tone and style you are wishing to create.
- One of your chosen conventions MUST be symbolism or include reference to how an aspect of the visual design or sound design will be used to convey information subtly or symbolically. You need to think about how a sign that could be used to give additional meaning to your film. The symbol or sign could be a significant prop, a setting element, a compositional choice using deep space to convey significant information in either the foreground or background, a recurring motif or a significant colour.
- The treatment should include references to existing films that might have influenced your ideas, including the film/films that you looked at earlier. Such references count as intertextuality and can add to the layered complexity of your short film. Your Research Blog will come in handy for this.
Exemplar
Follow this link to look at an exemplar of a treatment. Note how the student has specific ideas for their film, but there is clear evidence of where they got their inspiration from. This film went on to win Best Cinematography at the 2022 Noscars.
