The Brief: No. 8 Wire
asDesign a short film to meet the entry requirements of the Noscars. You may address the initial planning stages as a group (ie. this section on exploring the brief and the concept can be done as a group) but your evidence of research into other films, the script and the treatment need to be done as an individual. The shooting script or storyboarding can be a task that is divided up between the group members.
The final product is a design for a short film of between 3–7 minutes duration.
The target audience is the Noscars audience, which includes students of 14 to 18-year-old as well as a wide range of adults including parents, teachers, and guests.
The purpose of the short film is to entertain, engage, and refresh the Noscars audience in a narrative short film.
The content/tone/mood of the film should be appropriate for the audience. Specific elements that should be avoided include: suicide, gratuitous offensive language, sexual content or depictions of some illegal acts (ask if unsure).
As the Noscars is a Newlands College institution; like any institution it can become a bit tired. This year your aim is to freshen up the Noscars by focussing on genres, narratives, and conventions that either need a refresher, or have not been seen on the embassy screen for a while. You will be given a series of specific aspects (genres, narrative structures, and conventions) provided by the producers of the Noscars that you must use in order to fulfil this brief.
To pass this standard you must include instances of reflection and refinement throughout the pre-production. This can come from concept drafts, script drafts, research blog, recorded conversations with peers and teachers.
If you have another well formed idea that you want to bring along to pitchfest with prepared specific aspects pitch, make sure that you include at least one convention from the specific aspects options.

Exploring the Noscars
The Noscars is an annual short film showcase held at the Embassy, featuring an Oscars style awards ceremony judged by an external panel of adult judges as well as an “audience choice” award decided on the night. The event tends to sell out and is attended predominantly by students, but also many parents, family members and staff members. To this end, the content of your film should be appropriate and be likely to receive no more than an M rating. |

- Identify two trends that were present within the data you collected.
- Discuss ways in which you will use the data to inform creative decisions you make regarding your production this year.
